Ikea Gladom Hack

I love myself a good Ikea hack and haven’t really made the move to create my own. I’ve probably been to our local Ikea three times in the last two months to shop for things for the nursery and little bits and pieces for our living room after taking down our Christmas decor. One of the pieces I saw the first time going was this pretty basic and simple GLADOM tray side table for under $15!! What a steal! Back home I went on Pinterest to get some inspiration but only found super simple hacks like spray paining the whole table. I decided to add another fun element to create an even more sophisticated look: marble contact paper!

Here are the steps and some pictures:

Ikea Hack Gladom

Materials:

1x white GLADOM tray table from Ikea

Rust-Oleum metallic gold spray paint  from your local Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart etc.

Marble contact paper

Scissors or X-acto knife

Smoothing tool/ credit card

Scotch adhesive protective dots

Instructions:

  • Assemble tray table following directions on how to put it together (assembly instructions)
  • Spray paint table and tray wearing gloves and mouth protector on a piece of carton or similar, best outside because of fumes, and let dry
  • measure tray size and copy onto contact paper
  • cut out the circle and carefully transfer contact paper to the outside/ bottom part of the tray, use your smoothing tool or a credit card to get rig of any bubbles.
  • Also when ordering the self-adhesive contact paper the length cover the entire tray (17 1/2 “)
  • this step is optional but I just felt safer adding protective clear dots to the inside of the top part of the poles of the table so the tray would be safe in place
  • put tray back on table and voila – you’re finishes with your one of a kind chic gold and marble side table for under $25!

The accessories on top of the table are also all from Ikea and are linke here: two-tone vase, tropical leaves, boxes with lid set of 3

Let me know if you enjoy this Ikea hack and I can’t wait to finish up Baby girl’s nursery to show you guys where the table found it’s place in her room!

Happy Monday and have a great week!

18 Months Old Toddler Update

It’s been a while since my last update on Luca and I swear I turn around and he’s like a whole different child each week, leaning so many new things in such little time! I can’t believe he’s officially 1 1/2 years old and will be a big brother and not our baby boy anymore in just 3 short months! We’ve been trying to prepare him for the arrival of his new baby sister, which honestly I’m not sure how much he’s realizing it. We keep asking him “where’s the baby?” and then point to my belly which he gets more less and then every time we’re out and about and see an actual baby we point it out to him as well.

Latest tricks: If you’re following us on Instagram I’m sure you’ve witnessed his obsession with his scooter and in my professional mom opinion (which might be slightly biased) he’s doing an amazing job and has gotten so comfortable that he’s even trying to stand on it with no hands. He goes so fast when we’re out on the sidewalk but knows to stop before we cross the street. Other than the scooter he loves to dance, wrestle with his daddy, feed his pup Henry, go to our mommy and me gymnastics class, play with and stack up blocks, read books and play any game associated with balls (golf, soccer, ping pong, or just throwing them).

He’s become so crazy active it’s like a full time job running after him these days so we’ve been enjoying spending a lot of time outside now that it’s cooled down, again with the scooter, going to the park, the zoo, or the botanical garden. We went on a short weekend trip to visit my sister in law in Miami and went to a science museum there which he actually enjoyed, so I’m looking forward to exploring our local children museum here in Dallas soon.

The word count keeps on growing with some German and English words (I primarily speak German with him when it’s just the two of us but we live in the states). Another fun thing he’s started is to recognize my husband and I on pictures and of course his dog Henry and says all of our names.

Oh and almost forgot his ability to say cheese when taking pictures, it’s the cutest!!!

Daily routine: Wake up call is usually between 7 and 7.30 am and unfortunately Luca strongly dislikes hanging out in bed with us in the morning and is ready to go right when he wakes up. So we’ll do breakfast, go on a walk with the dog and then I usually try to get ready while he plays or I will put on a short 20 minute recorded show (yes, I’ve officially caved to the strict no TV rule but for sure try to keep it to a minimum of an hour a day).. then we will usually be busy in the morning with running errands, playing outside, go to the library for story time or meeting up for playdates until lunch time around 11.30 am. I will put him for his nap by 12.30- 1 pm which is where I try to get my cleaning, resting and also napping in while I still have only have one little one. The transition from two to one naps took him quite he while but he’s now napping pretty consistently for 1 1/2-2 hours in the afternoon. We’ll do more outings in the afternoon or just play in the house, take Henry on a walk again and then have dinner by 6.30 pm and then bed time by 7.30 pm.

Foods: Breakfast is for sure our best meal where he’ll eat like a champ things like cereal, oatmeal, egg and banana pancakes, bread with cream cheese and jam and fruit and yoghurt. The problem with lunch and dinner are the snacks in between. He’s always so hungry before the actual meal that it’s sometimes hard to feed him a full meal for those times and on top of that he’s become a little picky with his foods and just thinks it’s such a fun game to start throwing food once he decides he’s done eating. We’re still sticking to a strictly vegetarian diet which has worked out well for us and I’m thankful my husband is on board with it since I value this way of living so much for myself and my children (preferably for my husband as well but he’ll still get his meats in outside of my cooked meals).

Another update will be that Luca is starting two days of pre-school this January, which will be a huge relief once our baby girl arrives in late February. I’ve magically found a German school (called German International School of Dallas) less than 15 minutes away from our home and I couldn’t be happier with their ways of teaching and keeping up with my language and traditions away from my home country. I’m a little nervous to actually see him go and him being a big boy that goes to school but I know I’ll be thankful to have more time to myself and then to spend with the new baby. I will definitely keep you guys updated once he’s started in the beginning of January.

Here are some pictures from the Miami family trip. Luca definitely enjoyed having both of mommy and daddy’s full attention not to mention his aunt’s.

For now we’re trying to enjoy all the fun end of year activities with family and friends and snap some pictures along the way to share with you guys!

Let me know if you have any question to add here or to include in our next post!

Happy early thanksgiving and holidays from our growing family to yours!
