1st Trimester Update

I have to say I’ve been very spoiled by experiencing an amazing first pregnancy with Luca, so the struggle with my first trimester in this pregnancy, which has been completely different, has been real! I am now 16 weeks pregnant and looking back it’s almost like with the birth, you know it was horrible but you really don’t remember how bad it actually was.

Nausea:

We found out pretty early on around 5 weeks probably and almost a week later my tiredness, exhaustion, and “morning” sickness that lasted on and off all day kicked it with some throwing up. All that is probably manageable but trying to run after your crazy active toddler, going to work and traveling out of the country twice had been harder than expected. I was also still nursing through week 9 of this pregnancy which I think made me even more exhausted. What helped me was snacking when the first hint of nausea hit and trying to lay down. Whenever Luca took his naps I would try to also rest or nap and leave the household for later when I was feeling better. Eating was sometimes hard for me though because I got some random food aversion and after a few bites of my food would have to stop. So I just tried to munch on small portions throughout the day.

1st OB visits:

Our first visit was basically just to confirm the pregnancy, to measure the baby, estimate our due date, and take some blood tests. We also got to hear the heart beat and see the tiny little thing. The next appointment we were offered and informed about some tests like the NIPT (Noninvasive prenatal testing) which we ended up doing. This is a blood test to screen for Down Syndrome and other gene defects and will also tell you the gender, which got me very excited. And yes, we already know but will keep it our secret just for a little longer. Other than that I had a full physical and pap smear and so far all is looking good and healthy.

Bump:

While I didn’t show until about 20 weeks in my first pregnancy this muscle memory thing is real! I’ve started showing way early and around week 13 the bump has made its appearance. I’m lucky to live in Texas where it’s still basically summer and will keep on wearing my loose fitted dresses until it’s sweater weather. Many tight or skinny jeans or even high-waisted shorts I’ve had to retire and I’m making full use out of my belly band, which is a lifesaver during 1st and 2nd trimester when you just won’t fit in your old pants but are not big enough to fill out those maternity ones just yet. We recently moved and it gave me the perfect opportunity to go through all my old maternity clothes and so far I’ve been really good about not buying anything for myself except one pair of basic black bump friendly leggings. Which I cant say for baby clothes, but I promise it’s under 10 items so far!

Active:

To be completely honest I’ve been the laziest those first three months but when you’re not feeling well it’s almost impossible to get moving. Even though I haven’t been working out in a traditional way, I use the opportunity to take Henry (our dog) and Luca on walks, go to the park, chase this crazy toddler of mine, or ride the bike in our neighborhood. I already feel out of breath though when there’s the smallest little rise in height. For my weight I started with the same as with my first pregnancy and up to week 13 had gained about 6 lbs.

All in all it it is true about different baby different pregnancy! Especially now that it’s my second one and I’m so busy with our 16 month old most if the time I don’t even know which week we’re in or what is going on with the baby (you know how you check which fruit or vegetable your baby is week to week and what new developments have been happening). That doesn’t mean I’m any less excited, time once again is just going by so fast and I already know that February 27th will be here in no time! Also fun fact Baby Schober #2 will arrive exactly 2 months before Luca turns 2! I’m getting very excited to reach our half way milestone here in a month and then get to see the baby on the screen finally. Also started to feel the first little flutters in my belly which make me smile so big.

More in our 2nd trimester update in a few months. Trying to enjoy this amazing journey of becoming a family of four early next year and soaking up every moment with my sweet boy while he is still an only child.

xo,

Lisa
